New Network of Somali Radio Stations Established to Promote Cooperation

Briefing Note

radio_ergoNairobi, 18 February 2013: New Network of Somali Radio Stations Established to Promote Cooperation Owners and directors of 13 Somali FM radio stations have established a new network aimed at strengthening the Somali media in the interests of better serving the public.

Following two days of discussions, the radios signed an agreement to work together and to use the newly formed network called Shabakadda 2013(Network 2013) to stimulate collaborative initiatives.

Among the networks priorities are acting as a voice on media law issues, strengthening capacities of journalists and media houses, and producing joint programming to promote peace, stability and development.

The members of Shabakadda 2013have been engaged in a working relationship with Radio Ergo, which agreed to function as a secretariat for the network. The networks founding members are: Radio Kulmiye; Radio Daljir; Radio Dalsan; Star FM; Codka Nabadda (Voice of Peace); Radio Iftin; Radio Mustaqbal; Codka Gobollada Dhexe (Voice of Central Region); Radio Galgadud; Codka Mudug(Voice of Mudug); Radio Hurmo; Radio Kasmo; Gool FM.

Radio Ergos senior editor, veteran journalist Abdulkadir Mohamed Mursal, who chaired the discussions, described the formation of the network as an exciting development: It doesnt make sense to be on your own as a radio – there is great strength in unity. Now we are in a transition from war to peace in Somalia. This network has a lot of potential to ensure the media can impact positively in society for peace and reconciliation.

The memorandum of understanding between the members identified the following focus areas for their work:

  • - Advocacy in shaping policy and legislation for a conducive media environment
  • - Through broadcasting, engaging Somalis in promoting peace, stability and development
  • - Strengthening business capacities
  • - Building capacity of Somali journalists
  • - Improving the quality of media facilities

The meeting took place in Kampala, Uganda, 12-13 February 2013, and was organized and facilitated by Radio Ergo and International Media Support (IMS). For further information on the initiative, contact Abdulkadir M. Mursal or Louise Tunbridge at Radio Ergo
