Toronto | QOL | June 20, 2016 – Academic achievement for all students. A good education is the foundation of each child’s future. In Toronto District School Board schools, great learning is taking place in many schools. An additional sad reality however is that a significant percentage of students are not engaged and therefore not benefiting from all opportunities available. These students may not conform to the system, fail to ever catch-up and ultimately exit the school system before graduation. To ensure that students succeed in our schools we must first believe that improvement is achievable for all -period. Systems must work to connect and appeal to each individual student’s needs, wants and expectations. We must support each student in the TDSB system in a manner that enables a great future to be possible for all.

Advocating and supporting a strong public education system. Over recent years, the public education system has been eroding and resulting in the exit every year of significant numbers of students. In some cases, parents feel frustrated and consider the system unresponsive, too big and too complex to resolve their particular issues. In other cases, students may feel lost in the system. Injecting good customer service will be a positive step towards protecting and strengthening the public education system that we have.

Increasing parent engagement When the school community – teachers, parents and students – work together, there is a positive impact on student achievement. There is evidence especially that parents’ engagement can benefit students’ progress. As a very involved parent myself, I believe parent engagement results in better schools and higher student success.

Building a strong Ward Council in Etobicoke North A Ward Council is comprised of co-chairs of all schools within each Ward. While some schools in Etobicoke North Ward have active school councils that are highly involved in their schools, there are other schools lacking a functioning school council. It is imperative that all schools within Ward 1 have strong school councils that support students and educators.

Making our schools safe and welcoming places Schools should be open to the community and be hubs where learning and civic engagement can meet. A primary goal must be that there is a Safety First strategy in place in every school within the TDSB.

Standing up for barrier-free, accessible and inclusive schools. When a school is not accessible to all members of the community, some members are discouraged from volunteering, giving back and sitting on school councils. In other cases, lack of accessibility in the built environment may cause guardians to avoid parent and teacher interviews. If we truly believe education is a right for every citizen, then our schools must be accessible, barrier-free and inclusive places. The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) calls for businesses, organizations and government to be accessible to all by 2025. The Toronto District School Board is the largest school board in Canada and the fourth largest in North America. The TDSB has the opportunity to lead the nation in accessibility and to model what an inclusive education looks like. By making our schools barrier-free and accessible, we will be teaching students what a just society can be, where everyone is able to learn, teach or give back.
