A 20-year-old man from Somalia was handed a suspended sentence after admitting to stabbing and slightly injuring a fellow Somali.

Said Fasal Ibrahim Sahir was arrested earlier today after the victim was discharged from hospital. Prosecuting officer Robert Vella explained how, at 4am, another Somali man had gone to the police station with wounds to his arm, which had clearly been caused by a sharp instrument.

The victim was later medically certified as having suffered slight injuries.

The accused, who has been living in Malta for the past three years, was charged with slightly injuring Nasir Aabi, carrying a knife in public, breaching the peace, damaging a vehicle and being drunk and disorderly in public.

He pleaded guilty before Magistrate Gabriella Vella and apologised for his actions. Although the accused had admitted to using a sharp instrument, the weapon itself was not retrieved.

Legal aid layer Martin Fenech argued that the accused had been living in Malta for three years and had a clean criminal record. He appealed for a suspended sentence, pointing out that it was a one-off incident.

The court sentenced him to six months imprisonment suspended for two years. He was also ordered not to approach the victim for one year against a personal guarantee of €200.
