Government Activities in the past week

Mogadishu, November 8th 2016 – HE the Minister of Information, Mohamed Abdi Hayir ‘Mareye,’ briefed the media on the development and security activities of the Federal Government of Somalia in past week.

The Minister highlighted the progress that has taken place in the past week including; HE the President of Somalia opened the headquarters of the Somali Air Force; HE the President of Somalia received the credentials of the European Union’s Ambassador to Somalia; 8 al-Shabaab Fighters were killed in Goof-Gaduud, Bay; Somali security forces detained the killers of a traditional elder in Mogadishu; the Centre for the Somali National Orcestra was inaugurated; a Kenyan woman who was held hostage by a kidnap gang was rescued in an operation by Somali security forces; the Presidents of Puntland and Galmudug states signed a peace agreement to end conflict in Galkayo; Sudan offers scholarships to 137 Somali students; and a road maintenance project was launched in Kahda, Mogadishu.

HE the President of Somalia Opens Headquarters of Somali Air Force

On November 1st 2016, HE the President of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud opened the headquarters of the Somali Air Force in Affisione, Mogadishu, in an event attended by senior officers from the Somali Air Force, top military personal from the Somali National Army (SNA) and the National Intelligence & Security Agency (NISA), and the Attorney General.
The Commandant of the Somali Air Force, General Mohamed Sheikh Ali, said the re-opening of the base is an indicator that the Somali government is recovering from civil war and noted that the base was the site of the formation of the original Somali National Army. At the same time, the commandant also acknowledged the various individuals who contributed to the renovation process.
HE the President thanked everyone who participated in the renovation of the base and noted that, while the re-opening was long overdue, he also urged the men and women of the Somali Air Force to now take the development of the Somali air power to the next level.

HE the President of Somalia Receives Credentials of the EU’s Ambassador to Somalia

On November 3rd 2016, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, received the credentials of the newly appointed European Union Ambassador to Somalia, Veronique Lorenzo, who also conveyed messages from the Executive of the European Union.
In the subsequent discussion, the new Ambassador acknowledged HE the President’s acceptance of her credential papers. HE the President also highlighted the challenges facing Somalia and the significant progress made in sectors like security, democratisation and federalism, recognizing the European Union’s consistent support for Somalia. He also urged a speeding up of efforts to strengthen relations between the two entities and encouraged Veronique Lorenzo and the EU to work closely with Somali government in in support of the recovery of the Somali nation.

8 al-Shabaab Fighters Killed in Goof-Gaduud, Bay

On October 30th 2016, a spokesman for the Somali National Army (SNA) briefed the media on major clash between al-Shabaab and the Somali security forces in the village of Goof-gaduud, 30km north of Baidoa in Bay.
The SNA spokesman detailed how 8 al-Shabaab fighters, including the al-Shabaab Deputy Commander of Bay & Bakool regions, were killed when they mounted an attack on government forces in the village.

Somali Security Forces Detain Killers of Traditional Elder in Mogadishu

In Mogadishu on November 2nd 2016, Wadajiir District Administrator, Hillowle Hefow Hussein, briefed the media on the arrest of the killers of a local traditional elder.
The elder was gunned down by two pistol-wielding assailants near Wadajir market, according to the witnesses at the shooting scene.
The Mayor of Mogadishu/Governor of Banadiir and other officials attended the Wadajir District Police Station, where the suspects have been paraded as part of the briefing to the media. The Mayor welcomed the capture of the criminals, also noting the gratitude the public felt to the security forces for this operation.

Centre for the Somali National Orcestra Inaugurated

On October 30th 2016, the Somali First lady, Qamar Ali Omar inaugurated a new Centre for the Somali National Orchestra in Mogadishu.

The occasion was attended by HE the Minister of Information, Culture & Tourism, Mohamed Abdi Hayir ‘Mareye’, members of the Somali Federal Parliament and with representatives of all walks of the Somali society who toured the Centre, meeting musicians including the renown artist and playwright, Abdi Dhuh Yusuf Hassan, who will be the Managing Director of the National Theatre.

Members of Parliaments, Abdi Hashi Abdullahi (a former CEO of National Theatre) and Khadijo Mohamed Dirie both paid tribute to the First Lady’s initiatives for the renovation of the Centre.

Kenyan Woman Hostage Rescued by Somali Security Forces in Galmudug

In Ammara district, Mudug region, on October 29th 2016, a Kenyan woman, Louise Njoki Weru, who had been held for nearly two years by a Somali kidnap gang, was rescued by Somali Special Forces. In a briefing to the media on October 30th 2016, Galmudug State Authorities gave details of her captivity and subsequent rescue.

HE the Vice President of Galmudug State, Mohamed Hashi Abdi, received Ms Weru at his office where she told him of the conditions she had to endured while captivity including malnutrition and dehydration.
The news comes just a week after 26 sailors from Malaysia, who had been held captive by Somali pirates for 4 years, were freed and flown to Kenya, where they received treatment before flying home.

Presidents of Puntland, Galmudug States Signed Peace Agreement to End Conflict in Galkayo

After a week of negotiations, Puntland and Galmudug have signed a peace agreement to end the hostilities in Galkaayo that have cost many lives and displaced thousands.
Officials said that the two regions have agreed to a peace deal brokered by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and announced an immediate ceasefire and demobilisation of forces in the western area of Galkayo.
The UAE has said it will stand by Somalia to ensure peace and stability is restored across the country with another meeting due to be held in Kismayo on November 20th 2016.
HE the President of Puntland, Abdiweli Gaas, and HE the President of Galmudug, Abdikarin Guled, HE the President of Hirshabelle, Ali Abdullahi Osoble, and the President of South West, Sharif Hassan Sheikh Aden, were present the signing agreement in the UAE.

Sudan Offers Scholarships to 137 Somali Students

The Somali Ambassador to Sudan and the Somali Student Association have welcomed the the offer of 137 scholarships for Somali students that have been offered by the government of Sudan. HE the Director of the Ministry of Education & Higher Education, Ismail Yusuf Osman, spoke to the Somali National News Agency (SONNA) and confirmed that this group of students were were the eighth group to study in Sudan since 2009.

Road Maintenance Project Launched in Kahda, Mogadishu

On November 3rd 2016, as part of the Kahda Administration’s plan for the revival of the public infrastructure, the second phase of the reconstruction and maintenance of the road system in the district began. Many of the roads in the district had been rendered impassable by litter and neglect, further exacerbated by shelling and heavy rains.

The Commissioner of Kahda, Mohamed Ismail Abdullahi, noted that the residents of the district had shown exemplary support to the project, notably through paying their taxes to the local authority.
