Summary of Government Development & Security Activities in the Past Week

Mogadishu, 30th August 2016 – HE the Minister of Information, Mohamed Abdi Hayir ‘Mareye’, briefed the media on the development and security activities of the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) in past week.

HE the Minister detailed activities that took place in the past week including: Al-Shabaab’s presence in Bulo Hawo in Bay region ends; expired commodities were impounded at Mogadishu Seaport; a bomb maker was taken into custody in Bardhere; the Somali Parliament presented their achievements over the past 4 years; success for the Custodian of Somali Prisons; Tihsile bridge has been renovated; health equipment has been delivered to Karan in Mogadishu; and 5 people have been arrested for possession of hand grenades.

Al-Shabaab’s Presence in Bulo Hawo in Bay Region Ends

On August 22nd 2016, soldiers from South West State soldiers cleared al-Shabab out of the Bulo Hawo neighbourhood between Bardale and Qansax-dhere, Bay region. The deputy commander of the Somali Police Force of South West State, Mohamed Isaak Cari-Case, confirmed that fighting had taken place in Bulo Hawo but that the confrontation was now concluded with the total removal of al-Shabaab forces from the area.

Expired Commodities Impounded at Mogadishu Seaport

On August 21st 2016, FGS security personnel confiscated expired commodities at Mogadishu Seaport. The commodities belonged to a group of Somali businessmen who intended to sell the goods in the markets of Mogadishu. A spokesman for the police noted that the haul consisted of biscuits, sweets and exipired medicines and that a number of arrests had been made in connection with the raid. HE the Minister of Trade & Industry, Engineer Abdirashid Mohamed Ahmed confirmed the arrests, noting that there had been a number occasions where nefarious businessmen had sought to sell expired goods to innocent civilians but that the FGS would not tolerate such behaviour.

A Bomb Maker was taken into Custody in Bardhere in Gedo

On August 21st 2016, a bomb maker was taken into custody in Bardere in Gedo Region. The District Security Commander, Colonel Hussein Omar Hassan, confirmed the arrest, noting that the individual in question had been behind a number of attacks in the area. The residents of Bardere universally welcomed the arrest of the terrorist by government security forces.

The Somali Parliament Presented their Achievements Over the Past 4 Years

August 20th 2016 marked the fourth anniversary of the Somali Parliament and to mark the occasion the Second Deputy Speaker of the Federal Parliament of Somalia, HE Mahad Abdalla Awad Guddoomiye, presented a summary of the achievements in that time to members of Parliament.

He noted major achievements including the establishment of the Villa Hargeisa Centre and other office premises as well as the main meeting chamber where the parliamentarians regularly meet. He also noted that the 9th Parliament of Somali Republic passed more than twenty different pieces of legislation during its session and has laid the groundwork for many more pieces of vital legislation to be passed by the coming 10th Parliament.

Success for the Custodian of Somali Prisons

The Commissioner of the Somali Custodial Corps, Major General Bashir Mohamed Jama, has made significant changes to the operating systems of Moagdishu Central Prison including the establishment of better education facilities to ensure the successful rehabilitation of prisoners and has also overseen the provision of improved facilities for prisoners ranging from new beds and furniture in cells as well as televisions to allow the prisoners to view their beloved sports. These changes are part of the Commissioner’s commitment to respecting the human rights of all those who are detained in the prison facility.

Tihsile Bridge Renovated

On August 23rd 2016 the newly renovated Tihsile Brige was opened in Lower Shabelle Region. Also known as 10 Bridges, the structutre is located between the Afgoye and Wala-weyne districts of Lower Shabelle Region. The opening ceremony was attended by officials from South West State and Lower Shabelle region. The Lower Shabelle Regional Commissioner, Ibrahim Adan Ali presided over the event and offered his thanks to the tax payers of the area, the contributions of which were used to fund the renovation.

Health Equipment Delivered to Karan in Mogadishu

On August 25th 2016, the Italian government donated a quantity of medical equipment to improve maternity and infant care in the Mother & Child Hosptial (MCH) in the Karan district of Mogadishu. The Karan District Commisioner, Omar Meyre Ma’ow, attended the handover ceremony and praised the support offered by the Italian Government. Colonel Bernardo of the Italian military, who is part of the European Union Training Mission in Somalia and who also attended the ceremony, explained that it was his government’s priority to enhance maternal and infant care in Somalia.

5 People Arrested for Possession of Hand Grenades

On August 25th 2016, the commander of Hamar Weyne police station in Banadir region, Abdulkadir Ahmed Nur, announced the arrest of five suspects on charges of possessing and attempting to use hand grenades to attack the private residence of HE the Minister of Defence.
