In a move to address growing traffic congestion and security concerns, the Commander of the General Department of Road Safety (Traffic) in Somalia, Gen. Bishar Ahmed Gedi, has announced the initiation of operations to combat illegal buildings and makeshift structures along the roads.

Expressing concern over the construction of business centers along pedestrian pathways causing traffic congestion, Gen. Bishar cautioned individuals engaging in such practices. He emphasized that building on pedestrian pathways, washing cars, and parking vehicles in unauthorized areas have led “to significant traffic jams and security challenges.”

Gen. Bishar outlined that, in collaboration with Mogadishu Local Government, operations are set to commence on Saturday, February 3, 2024. The focus of these operations will be the demolition of illegal buildings and business centers along main roads, aiming to alleviate congestion and enhance overall security.

“The pathways for pedestrians are designed for the safety of traffic and people. I am sending a warning to people who have set up commercial markets that sell miraa, meat, and other things. Tomorrow is the D-day, Saturday, February 3, whoever is found will have no one to blame,” warned Gen. Bishar Ahmed Gedi, highlighting the imminent enforcement of regulations.

The Commander of the Traffic Force stressed that these operations intend to address the surge in illegal constructions witnessed in recent months and contribute to restoring the aesthetic appeal of the town while reducing road congestion.

Drawing attention to the risks posed by such illegal activities, Gen. Bishar referred to the tragic incidents in Sobe where explosions claimed lives, citing that many of those affected were involved in businesses along the roadside.

As Somalia’s Traffic Police gears up for these operations, the emphasis is not only on ensuring traffic flow and safety but also on reclaiming public spaces from unauthorized constructions to create a more secure and visually appealing urban environment.
