Somalia’s Livestock Exports to Egypt on the Rise Amid Sudanese Conflict and Food Supply Chain Disruption

Sudan Conflict: The ongoing conflicts in Sudan and Ukraine have disrupted the global food supply chain, leading to soaring prices of food products in Egypt. With its food security status becoming a matter of concern, the country is actively seeking alternative sources of grains, wheat, and livestock.

The Sudanese crisis has opened up opportunities for neighbouring countries like Somalia to export their livestock products, particularly to meet Egypt’s growing demand for meat.

Sudan Conflict Spurs Egyptian Demand for Somali Livestock

The Sudanese crisis has prompted the Egyptian Minister of Supply and Internal Trade, Ali Al-Moseli, to consider importing meat from Somalia and Chad to maintain food supplies for Egyptian citizens.

Trade between Egypt and Sudan, particularly livestock and agricultural products, has grown since 2018. However, Sudanese exports to Egypt have dropped significantly, and the ongoing conflict is expected to further impact the production and export of these commodities.

This decline in availability has led to increased demand and soaring prices for meat and dairy products in Egypt, making it an opportune time for Somalia to capitalize on the growing demand for livestock products in the region.

Somalia Seizes the Opportunity to Export Livestock to Egypt

Somalia’s economy rebounded in 2021, with GDP growth of 2.9 per cent, despite facing challenges such as delayed elections, drought, supply chain bottlenecks due to COVID-19, and increased insecurity.

Despite these challenges, Somalia is well-positioned to increase its exports to Egypt, particularly in the livestock sector. Over 60% of the country’s population depends on the livestock sector for food and income, making it a key driver of the country’s economy.

To capitalize on Egypt’s growing food demands, Somalia needs to overcome constraints like political instability, security concerns, and drought impacts. Investment in innovative strategies, boosting production, and maintaining a reliable supply chain can help Somalia seize this opportunity.
