Borama – The people in Borama city in northern Somalia protest against the illegal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Ethiopia’s Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed, and Somaliland President Muse Bihi on January 1st, 2024, saying our sea is not for sale.

The Minister of Commerce of the Somaliland Administration, Mohamed Hassan Saajin, said that Ethiopia is interested in annexing land but not investing in a seaport. He was referring to the recent illegal MoU between Ethiopia and Somaliland. The unlawful agreement was strongly opposed by the Somali government and nullified by the Federal Parliament.

People in areas under Somaliland are against the MoU and they are all out on the streets of Borama today to demonstrate their sense of ownership and show this land belongs to the people of Somalia and cannot be sold.

“Our sea is not for sale, our land is not for sale”, demonstrators were chanting with these words.

The President signed a law that nullified the illegal MoU agreement between the two sides and said “This law is an illustration of our commitment to safeguard our unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity as per international law,” President Mohamud said”.
