A radiant beacon of Somali heritage shines brightly through the unwavering efforts of the Horseed a cultural Community Based Organisation (CBO) in Eastleigh. Established in May 2018, this dynamic group, consisting of 80 passionate individuals, is dedicated to preserving, teaching, and celebrating the rich Somali culture while embracing the ever-evolving technological landscape.

The group’s primary mission is to inspire Somali youth to safeguard their cultural legacy and navigate the delicate balance between tradition and technology. With 25 girls and 27 boys, aged between 18 and 35, Horseed embodies the spirit of a youthful movement committed to keeping Somali traditions alive.

Gathering at the Eastleigh Social Hall from Monday to Friday, the group engages in a variety of activities. From teaching the intricate art of dhaanto dancing to imparting technological skills like video editing and graphic design, they create a vibrant space attracting hundreds of residents, including those from other Kenyan tribes eager to witness their breathtaking practices.

The motivation behind Horseed’s inception stems from a noble cause: countering erroneous innovations that risk diluting the authenticity of Somali heritage. The group aims to provide purpose for the youth, redirecting them from potential issues like drug use. Additionally, they strive to dissuade youth from undertaking risky illegal migration, combat clan issues, and alleviate stress among their peers, fostering unity and a sense of identity within the community.

Horseed’s efforts have not gone unnoticed, with the group receiving prestigious awards, including recognition at the Nairobi International Trade Fair, where they were among the elite few chosen to welcome President William Ruto in September 2023. Their accolades also include triumph at the Nairobi Cultural Festival in 2022.

Beyond the accolades, Horseed’s unique dance performances have captivated audiences, earning them invitations to various functions and celebrations alongside renowned musicians like Ali Dhaanto, Hassan Gantal, and Abdirizack Anshax. Notably, one of their performances in a music video by Hassan Yare and Filsan Ahmed has garnered over 3 million views on YouTube.

At the helm of Horseed is the 26-year-old Mohamed Amin Abdirahman Hassan, the current Head and co-founder. Reflecting on their journey, Mohamed Amin highlighted their significant performance at the 2022 Nairobi Festival, organized by Governor Sakaja.

“Our mission centers on engaging the youth, seen as a generation disconnected from their cultural roots,” he says. Mohamed Amin emphasized, “The older generation knows the culture, and it’s the youth who need to learn.”

Speaking on the group’s impact on his life, 25-year-old Mohamed Hassan, a member for two years, praised Horseed for aiding struggling youth in finding work and battling addictions. He commended the familial environment and supportive leadership that drew him to the group.

“Everyone is a family here despite our different backgrounds; we even help each other get employment,” noted Mohamed.

Beyond music, Horseed offers courses in video editing, content production, forex trading, and psychology to combat stress and substance abuse. Expanding their reach, they opened a branch in Wajir county in 2023, with plans for more branches in Garissa, Isiolo, and Mandera. However, financial constraints hamper their progress, relying on volunteer efforts and lacking adequate equipment for training is a major challenge.

Mohamed Amin hopes they will one day get government support to obtain necessary equipment. He sends a warm invitation to anyone eager to learn and join their cause in spreading Somali culture.
