The Citizen | March 14, 2017 | By The Citizen Reporter – Dar es Salaam. Somali businesspeople in Tanzania have raised a $100, 000 (about Sh260 million) to be spent on purchasing food and offer other humanitarian support to over six million people who are facing starvation in their home country. The Somalia Ambassador to Tanzania, Mr Mohamed Hassan Abdi, said here yesterday that Somalis are currently at a crossroads on how to deal with the famine given the fact that the country is facing one of the most acute drought in over 60 years.

It is also facing a serious political instability as a result of the military insurgency by al-Shabaab terror group.

“As a nation we are at a crossroads in the sense that we are confronting more than three enemies at ago. We are facing acute drought which has prevented Somalis from sowing any of the food crops to feed themselves while political instability is also troubling us and worse still al-Shabaab terror group are making it impossible for Somalis to settle down and work for their personal and national prosperity,” he said.

Speaking at the event, the Djibouti Honorary Consul in Tanzania, Mr Said Shamo, said they were compelled to donate the little they had to save lives of Somali people.

“It is good and by chance we are in Tanzania, a peace-loving nation. That is why we are not facing starvation. If we were in Somalia, possibly, it could have been us facing the same crisis and we were to require support from our fellow countrymen abroad,” he said.

He called upon Somalis in Tanzania to support of their relatives back home.

Mr Shamo is confidend that with the support from Somalis living in the diaspora, the newly elected Somali President Mohammed Andullahi Farmajo, will steer the country to the right direction and anchor it at the most correct sea port. According to the latest findings, by the Food Security and Nutrition Analysis Unit (FSNAU) in Somalia, almost 3 million people face famine, more than double the number six months ago. About 363,000 acutely malnourished children need urgent treatment and nutrition support, including about 71,000 who are severely malnourished, according to FSNAU.
